Grey Sotol (also known as Desert Spoon, Common Sotol or Wheeler Sotol) is desert plant often confused with yucca. It has long slender, spiny leaves and round, symmetrical form. Grey Sotol is very drought and heat tolerant, and must have well-drained soil and full sun to do well. It tends to rot in heavy soils. Because of its spines, it should be planted away from traffic areas.
It produces tall flowering stalks in late spring and summer. The flowers attract hummingbirds. Grey Sotol creates a dramatic effect when planted as a focal point; it also performs well as a container plant.
